This is a holiday?

High OVC, -23C,

Trucker Joe: "Who you guys working for?"
Me: "No one. This is a holiday"
Trucker Joe: " Holy F...!"

This isn't the first time a conversation has gone this way. Why am I starting to think some people don't see this trip for what it is - an experience?
News from Trucker Joe is not good. Apparently the road to Normal Wells is "in bad shape" because a fracking crew tore it all up with their trucks. Guess we'll find out in due course. As long as it's not this bad: Nid-de-poule
We bid adieu to the "Mirage" at 0830 after a restful night. Apparently the High Level tourism bureau borrowed heavily from the fame of their Southern cousin Las Vegas to name their hotels. The Flamingo, Oasis, Mirage e.t.c. About the only thing in common that I can see is the March mean temperature (with the minus omitted of course).
At 1030 we cross the 60th parallel and have our picture taken by four fellow 'tourists'- school teachers from the Maritimes.
We take a short detour to drive the new bridge over the Mackenzie at Ft. Providence. This bridge took years to build and stands as a reminder that change is ever present up here. When me make the return trip over the bridge, there she lies, the once proud MV
Merv Harvie up on the hard, awaiting break-up but with no duty to return to.

We descend to cross the Liard river. Onto the ice then back up the hill then down again to Ft. Simpson situated on and island tucked against the left bank of the Mackenzie. It's a beatiful sunny evening with little wind. Time for a walk before bed at the Mackenzie Rest Inn.

Still on course?

  1. Photographs are outstanding...love Twin Falls. I hate to say it, but I think Trucker Joe might know from which he speaks. Travel safely!

  2. It'd be cool if they still ran the Hervie for tourists, but the bridge was definitely much needed up there. Beautiful pictures! And I don't think you guys are nuts, not sure what that says about me though. ;)
